Harsco starts contract to support Jindal Stainless
27 April 2015India: Harsco Corporation has announced that it has begun a multi-year contract to provide onsite material processing services to India's largest stainless steel producer, Jindal Stainless Limited (JSL).
The project at JSL's all-new production facility in the growing steel-producing area of Jajpur, Odisha marks Harsco's fifth major steel mill services site in India and its first serving India's stainless sector. Harsco's services include specialised process technologies for recovering metal from stainless steel slag co-products.
"From 1Mt/yr of stainless steel production, we used to lose 5000 – 6000/t of metal embedded in slag," said JSL Unit Head, SK Agrawal. "With this new set-up, Harsco will handle all slag, treat it to recover metal and generate a metal-free slag." The metal content recovered by Harsco is available for reuse in the production of new steel, while Harsco continues to develop a number of commercial products from the residual slag material.
India: Rashtriya Ispat Nigam (RINL) is seeking partners to set up a joint venture 6Mt/yr cement plant in Vizag, Andhra Pradesh at a cost of US$472m. The government-run steel producer is currently in the process of floating a global tender inviting expressions of interest from interested parties.
RINL's interest in the project is to use fly ash and slag generated at its 2.9Mt/yr Visakhapatnam steel plant. Previously, RINL sought partners for the project in 2011 for a 3Mt/yr cement plant at a cost of around US$200m. RINL has since decided to increase the production capacity of the proposed project to over 6Mt/yr due the amount of fly ash and slag it produces. At present 1.2Mt/yr of slag is sold to local cement producers.
Plans to establish four new steel plants
02 February 2015India: There are plans to establish four major steel plants in the iron ore rich states of Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Karnataka, according to Union minister for Steel, Narendra Singh Tomar. He said that the country aims to acheive 300Mt/yr of steel production capacity by 2030 and the proposed four new plants are expected to contribute with a total capacity of 20Mt/yr.
JSW Cement aims for full capacity utilisation
26 January 2015India: JSW Cement, which has set up a 4.8Mt/yr capacity plant at Nandiyal in Kurnool, is hoping to increase its capacity utilisation to 100% in two years from the current 50%.
"This would be driven by an increase in cement demand from infrastructure and housing segments," said JSW Cement director and CEO Anil Kumar Pillai. The Nandiyal unit was set up with an investment of US$228m. "We are hopeful of using full capacity at the Nandiyal plant by 2017 - 2018 on the back of an increase in demand for cement."
The current plant could be extended to have a second unit of similar or higher capacity, if required. The long-term plan was to have 30Mt/yr in 10 years at multiple locations. For the slag requirements of the cement plant, JSW would also increase the capacity of its steel plant at Vijaynagar from 12Mt/yr to 20Mt/yr.
India: Neelachal Ispat Nigam (NINL), a joint venture between MMTC, Industrial Promotion & Investment Corporation of Odisha (Ipicol) and Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC), is reportedly planning to expand its steel output to 6Mt/yr from the existing level of 1.1Mt/yr.
The expansion is expected to happen within five years. The cost of the expansion is likely to be around US$4.73bn, out of which US$631m has already been invested. At present, NINL's product portfolio includes pig iron and low ash mettalurgical (LAM) coke, along with nut coke, coke breeze, crude tar, ammonium sulphate and granulated slag. The envisaged products in the future include billets, bars and wire rods of different grades and sizes.
