India: Vedanta-Sterlite Copper has met with the Kerala state government to discuss the use of copper slag in road building. The copper subsidiary of Vedanta wants to use copper slag as a partial replacement for river sand and manufactured sand in the construction of roads in the state, according to the Times of India newspaper. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has approved the usage of copper slag in various grades of concrete as a partial substitute for sand. Vedanta-Sterlite’s Tutucorin plant is currently produces 60,000 - 70,000t/yr of slag, none of which is used.

Europe: Tata Steel and ThyssenKrupp have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to create a European steel company by merging their flat steel businesses in Europe and including ThyssenKrupp’s steel mill. The proposed 50:50 joint venture will have its headquarters in Amsterdam and will be able to supply around 21Mt/yr of flat steel products.

“The Tata Group and ThyssenKrupp have a strong heritage in the global steel industry and share similar culture and values. This partnership is a momentous occasion for both partners, who will focus on building a strong European steel enterprise. The strategic logic of the proposed joint venture in Europe is based on very strong fundamentals and I am confident that ThyssenKrupp Tata Steel will have a great future,” said N Chandrasekaran, the chairman of Tata Steel.

The merger will create the region’s second largest steel producer after ArcelorMittal. Cost synergies of up to Euro600m/yr are expected through the integration of commercial functions, research and development and other supporting activities. In addition to this, ThyssenKrupp Tata Steel would seek to improve capacity utilisation of the network across the three hubs of Ijmuiden in the Netherlands, Duisburg in Germany and Port Talbot in the UK and their related downstream facilities.

India: The Cement Corporation of India (CCI) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), the owner of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant to build a 2Mt/yr slag and fly ash cement plant. RINL will provide the blast furnace slag and fly ash for the project. The plant is expected to cost US$23m and it will take 15 months once the deal is finalised.

India: Union officials at the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) have asked for an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into an alleged fixing of the price of blast furnace granulated slag (BFGS). The RSP claims that it couldn’t sell its slag by electronic auction due to limited storage space, lack of rail transport logistics and low market price of BFGS, according to the New Indian Express newspaper. However, sources quoted by the newspaper say that the plant had sufficient storage space and that at least three times as much railway cargo capacity was available as the RSP has indicated. It is estimated that it undersold its product by at least US$15.5m. Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram has also accused the steelmaker of favouring local cement producer OCL India in the scheme.

India: UltraTech Cement has commissioned 0.3Mt/yr slag cement grinding mill at its grinding plant at Patliputra in Bihar. The new capacity is intended to meet demand for slag cement in eastern India. With the expansion of the plant the cement producer has a production capacity of 70.6Mt/yr.

India: Harsco has announced a new Metals & Minerals division contract to provide metal recovery and slag sales services at Tata Steel's Kalinganagar steel mill in a multi-year contract valued at over US$25m. The company will be responsible for developing the commercialisation of slag in the region.

India: Ambuja Cement has launched Ambuja Compocem, a composite cement made from fly ash and slag. The product is being produced at its Chhattisgarh plant and it has been introduced to markets in Bihar and Jharkland. It is being marketed to all market segments including individual house builders, real estate developers and infrastructure projects.

“With the launch of Ambuja Compocem, we have achieved a three pronged sustainability approach by conserving natural resources, creating a greener product and fulfilling customer needs for a superior performance product. We call this approach delivering true value,” said Ambuja Cement’s managing director and chief executive officer Ajay Kapur.

India: Sagar Cement has ordered a vertical roller mill from Gebr. Pfeiffer for grinding granulated blast-furnace slag and granulated blast-furnace slag cements. The mill will be used at a new 160t/hr slag grinding plant at the cement producer’s Bayyavaram Village unit near Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. Delivery is scheduled to take place before the end of 2017. No price for the order has been disclosed.

The order is for a MVR 5000 C-4 mill equipped with a 4300kW-drive and four grinding rollers with active redundancy. The plant will grind granulated blast-furnace slag with a fineness of about 4,500 cm²/g acc. Blaine and it will also be able to grind composite cements from varying portions of granulated blast-furnace slag, fly ash and gypsum.

Core components of the mills, including the roller, tension system, grinding bowl and planetary gearbox, will be supplied from Europe. The mill foundation parts, the housing and the integrated high-efficiency classifier of the type SLS 4750 BC will be provided by Gebr. Pfeiffer India. The local subsidiary will also supply most of the equipment required to complete the grinding plant, including the plant fan and hot gas generator.

India: The state government of Odisha has asked the Steel Authority of India to build infrastructure, including a cement plant, in the Sundargarh district. The admission came about at a meeting between Steel Authority chairman P K Singh and chief minister Naveen Patnaik at the state secretariat. Other projects the state would like the steel producer to build include a hospital, a medical college and an education centre, according to the Times of India.

India: Sri Balaha Chemicals has ordered a LM 35.2+2 CS vertical roller mill from Loesche to grind slag at its Hindupur grinding plant in Andhra Pradesh. The mill is designed for grinding granulated blast furnace slag, it will have a production capacity of 50t/hr and the material will be ground to a fineness of 4000cm²/g Blaine. The contract also includes supply of a mill fan, dampers, expansion joints, a magnetic separator and a metal detector. The lead-time for the main components of the mill is 10 months.

Loesche India, Loesche’s subsidiary based in Dehli, will be handling the order. A similar mill has been operating at a cement plant in Bhavanipuram since 2001. Loesche India has sold over 100 vertical roller mills for the grinding of raw material, coal, and cement to various clients in India. World firsts for Loesche India include the LM 69.6 a six roller mill for raw material grinding, the LM 56.3+3 CS and the LM 63.3+3 CS.
