JSW Steel signs Harsco up for 10-year mill services agreement
21 January 2019India: JSW Steel has signed a 10-year agreement with US-based Harsco for a range of mill services. Harsco will provide JSW Dolvi in Maharashtra with on-site slag handling services including under-furnace digging, ladle wrecking, and hot slag transport. No value for the contract has been disclosed.
Slag yard of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant collapses
26 September 2018India: The slag yard at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant in Andhra Pradesh has collapsed. No injuries were reported during the incident, according to the Hindu newspaper. The cause of the accident remains unknown. The slag yard was built at the time of commissioning of the steel plant. An official said that production remained unaffected. Slag from the steel plant is supplied to cement and brick producers.
India: Engineering company Paul Wurth has released details on a new blast furnace it supplied for the Steel Authority of India’s (SAIL) Bhilai Steel Plant in Chhattisgarh. It supplied, with Larsen & Toubro, a 2.8Mt/yr blast furnace for the site that was commissioned in February 2018. The unit was the eighth furnace at the plant following seven mid-size furnaces of Soviet design built from the 1950s to the 1980s.
Slag processing equipment for the furnace included an Inba slag granulation unit with a cooling tower. Other general equipment supplied for the project included: copper and cast iron staves; a 2H Bell Less Top charging syste
m with pressure equalizing valves and bleeders; cardan-type tuyere stocks; a hot stoves plant of three internal combustion chamber stoves with waste gas heat recovery and process valves of Paul Wurth design; pulverized coal injection based on dense-phase conveying with three injection hoppers and 70t/hr capacity; a top gas cleaning plant with axial cyclone; annular gap scrubber and downstream energy recovery turbine. Paul Wurth also supplied its BFXpert Level 2 automation system to allow and control of the plant operation.
Paul Wurth noted that a particular challenge of the project was to fit the new blast furnace into a brownfield building site. In particular, the layouts of the main charging conveyor, the racks for utilities pipes and cables and the railway tracks had to be finalised with ‘unconventional’ solutions.
Blast Furnace 8 at Bhilai is the largest blast furnace put into operation by Paul Wurth in India so far. It has an inner volume of 4060m3, a hearth diameter of 13.4m, four tapholes and 36 tuyeres. The nominal production is 8030t/day of hot metal.
Wonder Cement orders slag mill from Gebr. Pfeiffer
11 April 2018India: Wonder Cement has ordered two vertical mills from Germany’s Gebr. Pfeiffer for its Nardana plant in Rajasthan. The order includes a MVR 6000 C-6 mill for grinding slag cement and a MPS 3070 BK mill for grinding fuel. Delivery is scheduled for early 2019 and mid-2019 respectively.
The MVR mill will feature a total drive power of 5820kW. Mixed cements will be be ground to a fineness of up to 5% R 45µm. The grinding plant will be designed to process granulated blast-furnace slag with a target fineness of approximately 4500 cm²/g Blaine and blast-furnace cements with different proportions of granulated blast-furnace slag, fly ash and gypsum and different product fineness degree. Wonder Cement has requested the option to grind relatively hot clinker in the mill while at the same time being able to reduce the cement temperature, and alternatively to use cold clinker from stockpiles.
The core components such as the tension system and the grinding rollers will come from Gebr. Pfeiffer in Germany. The grinding bowl and the gearboxes for the mill and classifier will also be delivered from Europe. Gebr. Pfeiffer’s subsidiary, Gebr. Pfeiffer India, will provide the housing parts, the foundation parts and supports of the rollers as well as almost the entire high-efficiency classifier type SLS 5600 BC. Gebr. Pfeiffer India scope of supply will incorporate most of the equipment to complete the grinding plant including the plant fan.
The MPS mill will grind petcoke with a capacity of 40t/hr to a product fineness of 2% R 90µm. It will come with a SLS BK classifier, allowing both coal and petcoke to be ground in the mill, dried with process gases and then classified in the integrated classifier. Due to the high abrasiveness of Indian coal, the mill will be designed with appropriate wear protection.
Most components of the coal mill will be supplied by Gebr. Pfeiffer India. The housing and foundation parts, the grinding bowl and a large part of the power-transmitting parts will be manufactured in India. Setting up the new MPS mill is planned to coincide with the commissioning of the entire kin line.
India: The Ministry of Steel has asked that the Ministry of Agriculture examine using slag from steel and iron production as a fertilizer. The government is particularly interested in using slag in areas with acidic soils, mostly in the eastern part of the country where productivity is lower, according to the Financial Express newspaper. 49M hectares of the country’s arable land has acidic soils from a total of 142M hectares total land that can be farmed.
Rourkela Steel Plant grows price for blast furnace granulated slag following corruption claims
27 March 2018India: The Rourkela Steel Plant has more than tripled the price it is receiving for blast furnace granulated slag since early 2017. Previously the steel plant was selling its slag to a local cement producer, according to the New Indian Express newspaper. However, since moving to using online auctions to sell the by-product the prices have risen. In early 2017 the Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram alleged that the price of slag was being fixed. However the steel plant countered that it lacked railway infrastructure.
Loesche provides update on slag mill for Sri Balaha Chemicals
25 January 2018India: Loesche has provided an update on the operation of a slag grinding mill it sold to Sri Balaha Chemicals in 2016. The LM 35.2 +2 S cement mill was supplied in 2016 and installed and commissioned by March 2017 at the customer’s site in Hindupur, Andhra Pradesh. The mill produces 50t/hr of granulated ground blast furnace slag (GGBFS) at 4000cm²/g Blaine. Subsequently the mill has achieved a production rate of 52t/hr and a specific power consumption rate as low as 27.2kWhr/t.
India: Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, has inaugurated JSW Cement’s plant at Salboni. The US$125m grinding plant has a production capacity of 2.4Mt/yr, according to the Press Trust of India. It started commercial production at the site in July 2017 with plans to manufacture Portland Slag Cement. The cement producer is already preparing upgrades at the unit including a US$15.6m captive power plant with a capacity of 18MW and a US$47m production capacity increase of 1.2Mt/yr.
KIC Metaliks plans slag cement plant at Raturia iron plant
22 December 2017India: KIC Metaliks plans to build a 300t/day slag cement grinding plant at its pig iron plant at Raturia in the Bardhaman district of West Bengal. The project is part of a wider upgrade at the site to turn it into a steel plant, according to Projects Today. Other upgrades a direct reduced iron kilns, a sinter plant, a rolling mill, a pulverised coal injection plant and a captive power plant. The upgrade plans are valued at around US$93m. The company is awaiting environmental clearance for the project.
Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited repairs blast furnace
04 December 2017India: Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited (NINL) is repairing its blast furnace at its 1.1Mt/yr integrated iron and steel plant at Kalinga Nagar in Odisha. The blow down process of the blast furnace, which had been commissioned in 2002, started in late November 2017, according to the Press Trust of India. The work is scheduled for completion by the end of February 2018. The unit produces granulated slag, as well as steel billets, pig iron, Low Ash Metallurgical (LAM) coke, nut coke, coke breeze, crude tar and ammonium sulphate.
