India: JSW Cement recorded a market share of 83% in the Indian ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) market in the 2024 financial year, which ended on 31 March 2024. CNBCTV News has reported that JSW Cement sells GBFS produced from slag supplied by fellow JSW Group company JSW Steel, alongside other partners in the steel sector. JSW Steel is presently expanding its refineries in Dolvi, Maharashtra, and Vijayanagar, Karnataka.

JSW Cement’s existing customers include construction firms for the Mumbai Coastal Road, Mumbai Trans-Harbour Sea Link, Bengaluru International Airport and nuclear power plant projects. India’s total national consumption of slag in the reporting period was an estimated 6 – 6.2Mt. Ratings agency CRISIL has forecast composite annual growth of 15 – 16% until the 2029 financial year, to reach 13Mt.

Canada: Carbon-negative concrete producer CarbiCrete has signed a deal with Holcim subsidiary Lafarge Canada. Under the deal, Lafarge Canada will process steel slag at its St. Constant cement plant in Québec for use as an ingredient in CarbiCrete’s CO2-cured cement-free concrete.

CarbiCrete partner Patio Drummond produces carbon-negative concrete blocks using CarbiCrete’s technology at its Drummondville concrete block plant in Québec. The company is on a drive to double the production of CarbiCrete blocks. It first partnered with CarbiCrete during trial production of its material in 2018.

Lafarge Canada vice-president of cement Andrew Stewart said “We are committed to reducing our environmental footprint and leading the way in sustainable construction. Our partnership with CarbiCrete is a testament to our dedication to offering sustainable solutions and actively participating in the circular economy.”

CarbiCrete CEO Chris Stern said “Collaborating with Lafarge allows us to leverage long-established infrastructure and years of expertise in processing steel-related by-products. This enables us to make an immediate climate impact as we scale the deployment of our technology which reduces embodied carbon in concrete by both avoiding emissions and removing carbon through mineralisation.” Regarding the on-going scale-up of production at Patio Drummond’s Drummondville plant, Stern said “Increased production of our carbon-negative blocks brings us closer to our common goal of decarbonising production of the world’s most consumed man-made substance.”

India: Bokaro Steel Plant has won granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) supply contracts with ACC and UltraTech Cement. Under the contracts, Bokaro Steel Plant expects to supply 1.3Mt of GBFS from its facilities in Jharkhand for use in cement production in the state. The Pioneer newspaper has reported that the contracts will run until August 2026.

US: Heidelberg Materials North America and Levy Group of Companies signed a granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) supply contract on 9 August 2023. Under the contract, Levy Group of Companies will supply Heidelberg Materials North America with 400,000t/yr of GBFS for use in its slag cement production. Deliveries will begin in early 2024. Heidelberg Materials North America says that it has upgraded its Speed cement plant in Indiana to increase the efficiency with which it grinds GBFS. Following the inauguration of its nearby 2.4Mt/yr Mitchell cement plant in June 2023, Heidelberg Materials North America plans to transition the 1Mt/yr to 100% speciality and slag cement production. Levy Group of Companies will supply the GBFS from steel industry sites in the Midwest Region.

Heidelberg Materials Midwest US president Axel Conrads said “Our agreement with the Levy Group of Companies to secure a consistent supply of slag granules will help us accelerate the transition of the Speed plant to slag cement production and better meet the increasing demand for more sustainable cement products in the growing Midwest market.”

US: Cementos Argos subsidiary Argos Florida Cement has won the Slag Cement Association (SCA)’s Durability and Infrastructure awards at its 2022 Sustainable Concrete Project of the Year Awards. The producer won the awards for its supply of slag cement to two projects in Florida in 2021. Its involvement in the American Bridge Company’s SR 679 Pinellas Bayway Bridge – Structure E replacement won it the Durability award, while its involvement in Superior Paving’s State Road 52 realignment. Argos Florida Cement congratulated its customers, who also received the awards.

South Korea: Continental New Materials has awarded a granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) supply contract to steel producer POSCO. Continental New Materials applies technology developed at the Ulsan National Institute of Science Technology (UNIST) to produce clinker-free cement.

POSCO's hot rolled and wire rod marketing manager Kim Dae-Up said "We will continue to provide support so that POSCO's steel by-products can become eco-friendly cement materials and contribute further to carbon reduction."

Brazil: Itaci Cement has purchased 100ha of land in Tabuleiro do Norte in the north-eastern Brazilian state of Ceará. Diario do Nordeste has reported that the company has invested US$66m in a development, though whether this will take the form of a clinker grinding or integrated cement plant has not been disclosed.
Companhia Siderúrgica do Pecém (CSP) will reportedly supply granulated blast furnace slag to the facility when operational for use as a feedstock.

Russia: Eurocement has signed a contract with Russia’s fourth largest steel company, Novolipetsk Steel (NLMK), for the supply of an estimated 25,000t of cement over the three months to 31 December 2019. Metal Daily News has reported that the cement will be used in conjunction with NLMK’s blast furnace slag to produce briquettes at a rate of 0.7Mt/yr.
