India: The Bureau of Indian Standards has granted a licence to Counto Microfine Products (CMP), a joint venture of Ambuja Cements and medical company Alcon Group, for the production of micro-fine Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) cement. The Times of India newspaper has reported that CMP operates a grinding plant in the state of Goa.
Belgorodsky Cement produces new slag cement
26 June 2020Russia: Eurocement subsidiary Belgorodsky Cement has announced the start of commercial production of a new CEM-III slag Portland cement. The company says that the cement is highly water and frost resistant and suitable for use in the construction of massive ground and underground structures. Belgorodsky Cement director general Eduard Androsov said, “We offer our customers an individual approach to solving construction problems and guarantee a stable supply of high quality products in the required volumes and within strictly defined deadlines.”
Russia: Iskitimcement has announced the beginning of CEM-II ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) cement at its Iskitimcement plant in Novosibirsk Oblast. Regional Weekly News has reported that the cement will be used in road base concrete production and soil reinforcement. Iskitimcement says that the cement has high frost, abrasion and impact resistance and strength of over 5.5MPa. It will sell the cement, the seventh type produced at the plant, in 25kg, 50kg and 1t bags.
Hanson uses ground granulated blastfurnace slag product in London super sewer project
14 February 2020UK: Hanson supplied its Regen ground granulated blastfurnace slag (GGBS) product for use on part of the Thames Tideway Tunnel super sewer project in Wapping, London. The product was used to overcome difficult ground conditions. Around 5700t tonnes of Regen, supplied from its Purfleet grinding plant in Essex, was used with 3000t of Ketton cement to create a binder to stabilise soil so work to construct a combined sewer overflow could progress and provide a connection to the main east tunnel.
Costain, VINCI Construction Grands Projects and Bachy Soletanche worked with Hanson in laboratory trials to test the performance of the system and suitability of the selected mix design. Deep soil mixing, a technique that enhances the characteristics of weak soils by combining them with a cementitious binder, was chosen as the final stabilisation method.
The Thames Tideway sewer network expansion is due for completion in 2024 and is happening across 24 construction sites in London, spanning from Acton in West London to Beckton in the east of the city.
Topkinsky Cement plant begins producing new slag cement
29 January 2020Russia: Sibirsky Cement Holding (Sibtsem) subsidiary Topkinsky Cement has announced that it has entered commercial production of a new Mita slag Portland cement with granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) at its 2.7Mt/yr integrated plant in Topki, for which it received a certification of conformity with ‘cement for general construction’ standards on 16 January 2020. Nina Poputnikova, Topkinsky Cement laboratory and quality department head, said that it is producing the cement in response to ‘construction companies’ increased interest in cement for use in reinforced, precast concrete in monolithic structures such as buried and hydraulic structures.’
“In the near future we plan to certify two new cements,” said Topkinsky Cement managing director Alexey Ospelnikov. One will be a low-heat general-purpose cement for large-sized concrete structures and the other a sulphate-resistant Portland cement. “Expanding the assortment will help strengthen the company’s position in the Russian cement market.”

Grinding plant in Andhra Pradesh. Gebr. Pfeiffer said the mill will grind slag and cement to a fineness of between 3000 and 3800 blaine at a rate of between 235t/hr and 340t/hr. It says the mill improves plant availability by the active redundancy of the grinding rollers, enabling mill operation with reduced rollers in the event of maintenance work or a malfunction.
US: Researchers from the University of Southern Florida (USF) testing the resistance to deterioration of cements containing between 30% and 70% of slags of various aluminium oxide (Al2O3) and magnesium oxide (MgO) contents when exposed to sulphates have discovered a general decrease in resistance with increased Al2O3 content. Real Estate Weekly News has reported that increased MgO was found to increase resistance, especially at 30% slag replacement.
Sri Lanka: Nandana Ekanayake, the chief executive officer (CEO) of INSEE Cement, has called for the regulations on blended cement to be relaxed. He said that some of the company’s Chinese contractors had asked for cements with 65% slag but that the current regulations do not allow it, according to Economy Next. The Sri Lanka Standards Institute has a limit of 20% slag content in cement. He added that there were no uniform international standard for slag in construction cement. He made the comments at the launch of the company’s first sustainability report.
Bureau of Indian Standards grants licence for slag cement production from UltraTech Cement
17 July 2019India: The Bureau of Indian Standards' Hyderabad branch office has granted a licence for a slag cement product made by UltraTech Cement. The ground granulated blast furnace slag product is for use for use in cement, mortar and concrete according to Indian Standard IS 16714:2018, according to the Press Trust of India.
Vallejo City Council to make decision on Orcem Americas slag cement project in May 2019
23 April 2019US: Councillors at the Vallejo City Council in California are preparing to make a decision on Orcem Americas’ slag cement plant project at the end of May 2019. The council has released a new draft Final Environmental Impact Report (FEIR), according to the Vallejo Times-Herald newspaper. However, staff said the document is not ready to be presented to the council for certification and possible project approval under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) due to a lack of information and cooperation from the applicants for the draft status of the report. Planning permission for the slag grinding plant and marine terminal was refused in early 2017.
