US: St Marys Cement won three national awards at the Slag Cement in Sustainable Concrete Awards 2023. The producer won the awards for supplying its slag cement for the construction of Wixom Assembly Park in Wixom, Michigan; of 333 North Water in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and of Excellerate Manufacturing in Appleton, Wisconsin.

US: The Slag Cement Association (SCA) has announced the winners of its 2022 Slag Cement in Sustainable Concrete Awards program at the ACI Concrete Convention that took place in San Francisco in early April 2023.

Eighteen construction projects from across the US were chosen to showcase the broad applications of slag cement. These construction projects were awarded in six categories: infrastructure, high performance, architectural, durability, innovative applications, and lower carbon concrete. Two research projects on slag cement use were also recognised in the program. The slag cement and concrete suppliers included Argos, Heidelberg Materials, Holcim, Ozinga, Skyway Cement and St Marys Cement.

US: The Slag Cement Association (SCA) has announced the recipients of its 2021 Slag Cement in Sustainable Concrete Awards program. Thirteen construction projects were chosen to showcase the broad applications of slag cement and its impact on creating more durable and sustainable concrete. The infrastructure winners included projects with slag cement supplied by companies including Argos USA, Cemex, Lehigh Hanson, Ozinga, Skyway and St Mary’s Cement. These projects included work on roads, bridges, residential construction, a concert venue, a sport stadium, airports, a theme park and a hydroelectric dam. Two research projects on slag cement from Cleveland State University and Florida State University were also recognised.

US: Cementos Argos subsidiary Argos Florida Cement has won the Slag Cement Association (SCA)’s Durability and Infrastructure awards at its 2022 Sustainable Concrete Project of the Year Awards. The producer won the awards for its supply of slag cement to two projects in Florida in 2021. Its involvement in the American Bridge Company’s SR 679 Pinellas Bayway Bridge – Structure E replacement won it the Durability award, while its involvement in Superior Paving’s State Road 52 realignment. Argos Florida Cement congratulated its customers, who also received the awards.

US: The Slag Cement Association (SCA) has announced the recipients of its 2019 Slag Cement Project of the Year Awards. A total of 12 construction projects from across North America were chosen to showcase the broad applications of slag cement. Two research projects on slag cement use have also been recognised in the program. The winning project teams include four state Departments of Transportation (DOT), two Canadian procurement authorities, one bridge authority and the Florida Army National Guard.

“The rise in DOT and infrastructure projects we are seeing reflects the increase in demand for materials that enhance concrete’s durability, resiliency, and ultimately the value of concrete,” said SCA board president, Ed Griffith.

The event was originally scheduled to be held at the American Concrete Institute (ACI) Spring Convention in early April 2020 but was postponed due to coronavirus-related state lockdowns.

Canada/US: TMS International’s sites in the US and Canada have received a total of 48 safety awards from the National Slag Association (NSA) for 2018. The NSA Safety Awards recognise superior performance as measured against occupational safety and health administration (OSHA) recordable injury rates. The awards were presented to the company during the NSA’s annual meeting in mid-September 2019.

US: The Slag Cement Association (SCA) has presented its 2017 Project of the Year Awards at the American Concrete Institution (ACI) Convention in Salt Lake City in late March 2018. Each project was selected by the SCA’s Technical Marketing Committee because of its exemplary and innovative uses of slag cement in concrete mix design. Nine awards were presented in categories for architecture, durability, green design, performance, innovative application and sustainability. Member companies involved in the winning applications included Lehigh Hanson, LafargeHolcim, Votorantim St Marys Cement, Ash Grove Cement, Skyway Cement Company and Argos USA.

“The SCA’s awards program does a great job of showcasing how versatile slag cement can be, and how it can help create stronger, more durable and sustainable concrete structures,” said Ed Griffith, president of the SCA.

Czech Republic: A project by ArcelorMittal Ostrava substituting the primary raw materials for steelmaking with specially processed recycled slag has been ranked fourth in a government competition promoting the use of waste by-products as resources. The Ministry of Industry and Trade ran the competition that received 127 entries. Project manger Jitka Halamová attended the award ceremony on behalf of the steel producer.

“Since we've been using a special technology to sort the slag to end up a with higher iron content and a lower level of phosphorus, we have been able to reuse that slag in our operations in much higher amounts than before. Thanks to that, we are able to save iron ore, additives and fuel and, at the same time, we don’t accumulate large amounts of waste on our premises,” said Halamová.

The new technique mechanically processes the 0-8mm steel slag that contains 35 - 40% of iron. This has enabled ArcelorMittal Ostrava to increase the slag’s iron content to 54 - 57%, while keeping the phosphorus content low enough to reuse the enriched slag in the sintering process, replacing iron ore, additives and fuel in production. Using slag in this way increases the sustainability of the business’ operations and offers economic benefits. In 2016 ArcelorMittal Ostrava recycled on average 1900t/month of enriched slag and in the process saved a total of over US$0.87m.

US/Canada: TMS International’s sites in the US and Canada have received 44 safety awards from the National Slag Association (NSA) for 2016. The NSA Safety Awards recognise performance as measured against Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recordable injury rates. The awards were presented to the company during the NSA’s annual meeting held in Hollywood, Florida.

“TMS is honoured to receive these important awards and it is a testament to the quality management within this organisation,” said Raymond Kalouche, president and chief executive officer (CEO) of TMS International.

Notably, the company’s operation in Jewett, Texas received the award for ‘2016 Most Improved Job Sites for Safety.’ Sites at Middletown in Ohio, Glassport/Horsham in Pennsylvania, PA; Freeport in Texas, Jewett and Texas and Petersburg in Virginia received safety awards for ‘Job Sites that have Exceeded 200,000 Hours Since Last Recordable Incident.’

In addition, Chad Wolfenbarger of TMS’ Portage, Indiana operation was recognised for winning the 2018 safety slogan contest with ‘Working Safely Today For Family Tomorrow.’ Sergio Mendoza of TMS’ Puebla, Mexico operation was recognised for a Best Practice award for the team’s effort in developing a slag market at the newly established site with a steel company in Sahagun, Mexico.

Brazil: ArcelorMittal Tubarão and Usiminas have been nominated in the Steelie Awards for a steel slag rural road-building project. The steel makers have been put forward for the Excellence in sustainability category of the eight edition of the awards organised by the World Steel Association. The winners will be revealed at the annual dinner of the 2017 General Assembly of the association in Brussels, Belgium on 16 October 2017.

ArcelorMittal’s research and development department developed its Revsol and Revsol Plus products, which turn steel slag into a primary road, car park and storage yard coating, replacing the use of non-renewable sources in road building. The manufacturers say that the product also reduces the need for road maintenance.
