India: A study at the DPG Institute of Technology and Management in Gurugram has investigated the effects of blending different concentrations of silica fumes to ground granulated blast furnace slag-based (GGBFS) geopolymer concrete. Findings reported in the Nature concluded that the addition of 10% silica fumes ‘significantly’ enhanced the durability and strength of the resulting concrete.
US: The Slag Cement Association (SCA) has released the curriculum for its Slag Cement University. The initiative is intended to be an educational resource on slag cement use in concrete construction for university professors and students. Teachers are encouraged to incorporate the content into existing construction management course material. The educational material was curated and developed by SCA members and staff to provide an overview of the applications, uses, and benefits of slag cement use. Content includes syllabus, exam questions, slide decks, and pre-recorded presentations on various topics.
UK: A team of researchers from six UK universities has filed a patent for a clinkerless cement product called Cambridge Electric Cement. Local press has reported that the project, called UK Fires, saw researchers successfully produce the cement using renewable power from recycled cement powder and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS). Following its successes, UK Fires has obtained a further Euro2m in funding from the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to continue its work into the range of concrete wastes suitable for use in Cambridge Electric Cement production.
