Paul Wurth celebrates 150 Years of Excellence
06 November 2020Luxembourg: Paul Wurth marked its 150th anniversary on 4 November 2020 by expressing its thanks to “Customers and partners for the faith they have placed in us and in our technologies during so many years. From supplying metal structures to local steelmakers at the beginnings to the present transformation of the industry towards decarbonised production processes, the prime objective of our business strategy has always been to listen to our customers and meet their requirements with added-value solutions.”
The group also expressed its hope for a “safe situation and positive mood” in which to connect with customers to “celebrate this important anniversary in a festive way, even with half a year of delay,” in mid-2021.
Turkey: Erdemir Group has ordered new INBA slag granulations systems as part of an order for two new blast furnaces (BF) from Luxembourg’s Paul Wurth for its Ereğli and Iskenderun integrated steel plants. At both sites a new furnace will replace an older production unit. The new blast furnaces are scheduled for blow-in in March 2021 and May 2021 respectively. No value for the order has been disclosed.
At Ereğli Erdemir’s new BF2 will have a hearth diameter of 10m, 24 tuyeres and two tapholes. It will produce 5000t/day of hot metal from an inner volume of 2188m3. At Isdemir the new BF1 will be sized at 12.5m in the hearth and 3587m3 of inner volume; it will be fitted with 32 tuyeres and four tapholes and will produce 7900t/day, which further increases the hot metal capacity at this site.
Paul Wurth will execute both projects on an EP basis including the supply of technological key items and related supervision of erection and commissioning. The orders include basic engineering of the blast furnaces with profile, cooling and lining concepts as well as the design of the stockhouses, top gas cleaning plants, slag granulation plants and BF cooling units.
For both furnaces, Paul Wurth will supply Bell Less Top charging systems and bleeder valves, refractories for the hot blast mains and bustle pipes, tuyere stocks with tuyere phenomena detection system (TPDS), technological and critical items for the top gas cleaning plants (consisting of axial cyclones, annular gap scrubbers) as well as for in total three INBA slag granulations systems. Extensive sets of TMT probes and process recorders include, inter alia, 3D TopScanburden surface profile meters and SOMA acoustic top gas temperature measurement. Under the same contracts, TMT will also supply fully hydraulic taphole machinery for equipping all the six tapholes in total.
India: Engineering company Paul Wurth has released details on a new blast furnace it supplied for the Steel Authority of India’s (SAIL) Bhilai Steel Plant in Chhattisgarh. It supplied, with Larsen & Toubro, a 2.8Mt/yr blast furnace for the site that was commissioned in February 2018. The unit was the eighth furnace at the plant following seven mid-size furnaces of Soviet design built from the 1950s to the 1980s.
Slag processing equipment for the furnace included an Inba slag granulation unit with a cooling tower. Other general equipment supplied for the project included: copper and cast iron staves; a 2H Bell Less Top charging syste
m with pressure equalizing valves and bleeders; cardan-type tuyere stocks; a hot stoves plant of three internal combustion chamber stoves with waste gas heat recovery and process valves of Paul Wurth design; pulverized coal injection based on dense-phase conveying with three injection hoppers and 70t/hr capacity; a top gas cleaning plant with axial cyclone; annular gap scrubber and downstream energy recovery turbine. Paul Wurth also supplied its BFXpert Level 2 automation system to allow and control of the plant operation.
Paul Wurth noted that a particular challenge of the project was to fit the new blast furnace into a brownfield building site. In particular, the layouts of the main charging conveyor, the racks for utilities pipes and cables and the railway tracks had to be finalised with ‘unconventional’ solutions.
Blast Furnace 8 at Bhilai is the largest blast furnace put into operation by Paul Wurth in India so far. It has an inner volume of 4060m3, a hearth diameter of 13.4m, four tapholes and 36 tuyeres. The nominal production is 8030t/day of hot metal.
China: Hebei Zongheng Group Tangshan Fengnan Iron & Steel has ordered Inba slag granulation and dewatering equipment as part of a new 12Mt/yr iron plant. Capital Engineering & Research Incorporation (CERI), the general contractor, has signed two contracts with Paul Wurth for engineering and supply of four sets of Central Feed Bell Less Top charging systems as well as slag-related equipment for the four blast furnaces at the new plant. The Inba order covers eight dewatering drum units under hot water system, which is quite commonly adopted by local customers.
All four blast furnaces of Tangshan Fengnan’s new plant are scheduled to be commissioned in 2018. A fifth blast furnace may be built after the hot commissioning of the first four furnaces.
Russia: Severstal has ordered four Inba slag granulation plants with dynamic dewatering of the slag sand from Paul Wurth as part of a contract for design and supply of technology and equipment for the reline of Blast Furnace No. 5 ‘Severyanka’ at Cherepovets Metallurgical Plant. Severstal’s installations will be the first use of this technology in Russia.
“The fifth blast furnace has been operating for over 14 years and this refurbishment project is expected to more than double its lifespan," said Alexander Shevelev, chief executive officer of Severstal.
The order also includes a Bell Less Top charging system with a hopper volume of 80m3 and a chute transmission gearbox with a pressurised cooling system. The blast furnace top gas will be cleaned by a Paul Wurth two-stage top gas cleaning plant. Auxiliary facilities at the plant will be built in 2018 and 2019 and the main equipment will be installed in 2020.
