US: Heidelberg Materials North America and Levy Group of Companies signed a granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) supply contract on 9 August 2023. Under the contract, Levy Group of Companies will supply Heidelberg Materials North America with 400,000t/yr of GBFS for use in its slag cement production. Deliveries will begin in early 2024. Heidelberg Materials North America says that it has upgraded its Speed cement plant in Indiana to increase the efficiency with which it grinds GBFS. Following the inauguration of its nearby 2.4Mt/yr Mitchell cement plant in June 2023, Heidelberg Materials North America plans to transition the 1Mt/yr to 100% speciality and slag cement production. Levy Group of Companies will supply the GBFS from steel industry sites in the Midwest Region.

Heidelberg Materials Midwest US president Axel Conrads said “Our agreement with the Levy Group of Companies to secure a consistent supply of slag granules will help us accelerate the transition of the Speed plant to slag cement production and better meet the increasing demand for more sustainable cement products in the growing Midwest market.”

Russia: Sibirsky Cement Holding (Sibtsem) subsidiary Topkinsky Cement has announced that it has entered commercial production of a new Mita slag Portland cement with granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) at its 2.7Mt/yr integrated plant in Topki, for which it received a certification of conformity with ‘cement for general construction’ standards on 16 January 2020. Nina Poputnikova, Topkinsky Cement laboratory and quality department head, said that it is producing the cement in response to ‘construction companies’ increased interest in cement for use in reinforced, precast concrete in monolithic structures such as buried and hydraulic structures.’

“In the near future we plan to certify two new cements,” said Topkinsky Cement managing director Alexey Ospelnikov. One will be a low-heat general-purpose cement for large-sized concrete structures and the other a sulphate-resistant Portland cement. “Expanding the assortment will help strengthen the company’s position in the Russian cement market.”

India: JSW Cement has revised its planned expansion to its 14Mt/yr total installed capacity to 39Mt/yr before 1 January 2023, an increase of 5Mt/yr compared to its initial target of 34Mt/yr by 2020. The figure includes JSW’s 54% subsidiary Shiva Cement’s new 1Mt/yr integrated and 1Mt/yr grinding plant, valued at a total of US$112m. Parth Jindal, JSW Cement managing director, said that the figure had been revised upward because Shiva Cement had become self-sufficient in clinker production, freeing the group’s east Indian cement production from ‘volatile import costs.’

Economic Times has reported that Shiva Cement is set to bring its limestone reserves to 100Mt with the acquisition of the Khatkurbahal mine. The company sources its granulated blast furnace slag from the Odisha steel industry. Production of JSW Cement’s flagship product, JSW Portland Slag Cement (PSC), releases CO2 at a rate of 325kg/Mt compared to between 760kg/Mt and 800kg/Mt for typical Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC).

Brazil: Itaci Cement has purchased 100ha of land in Tabuleiro do Norte in the north-eastern Brazilian state of Ceará. Diario do Nordeste has reported that the company has invested US$66m in a development, though whether this will take the form of a clinker grinding or integrated cement plant has not been disclosed.
Companhia Siderúrgica do Pecém (CSP) will reportedly supply granulated blast furnace slag to the facility when operational for use as a feedstock.

US: Charah plans to open its second granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) grinding plant at the Watco's Greens Port Industrial Terminal (GPIT) in Texas. The unit is scheduled to be fully operational in the third quarter of 2019. The site is located on the Houston Ship Channel and is accessible by ship, truck, and rail. It will sell materials to concrete product manufacturers throughout Texas and the Gulf Coast region. No cost for the project has been disclosed.

"As one of the leading fly ash sales and marketing companies in the country, we are excited to open this facility that will increase access to high-quality secondary cementitious materials (SCM) in the Texas and Gulf Coast market, where availability has traditionally been inconsistent," said Scott Sewell, president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Charah Solutions. He added that GBIT is an ‘ideal’ hub for Charah to use to serve its customers in Texas and the Gulf Coast.

GPIT will receive GBFS by ship and then use Charah Solutions' patented grinding technology to manufacture slag cement marketed under the brand MultiCem. The MultiCem slag cement is distributed throughout Charah Solutions' MultiSource materials network of more than 30 domestic sourcing locations that provide ready mix concrete producers and other customers SCMs, including fly ash and slag cement.

Saudi Arabia: The Chinese General Contractor Chengdu Design & Research Institute of Bldg Materials Industry Co Ltd in Chengdu has placed an order with Gebr. Pfeiffer SE for the supply of an MPS 3070 BC cement mill for Readymix in Saudi Arabia. The 1100kW drive power mill will grind 30t/hr of granulated blast-furnace slag and 46t/hr of Ordinary Portland Cement to a fineness of 4000cm²/g and 3600cm²/g, respectively. Delivery of the equipment is scheduled for 2015.
